Agenda for December CLTOUG Meeting

Date & Time: Thursday, December 12th,  5:45 - 8:00pm

Location: Royal Sun Alliance

Topic:  Comparing an OLTP System to a DSS System

Objective:

This presentation will compare an Online Transaction Processing system (OLTP) data model to a Decision Support System (DSS) data model.  Both systems have the same information, but are used in very different manners.  Attendees will be shown how these two systems are similar, differ and shown an example of one method of moving information from one system to the other in an Oracle 9i release 2 environment.

Abstract:

We will use an order entry system for our case study.  With this system we will provide the OLTP and corresponding DSS data models.  With these two models, attendees should be able to compare and contrast the similarities and the differences between these two information systems.  Over the course of the 1-½ hours we will discuss the subtle differences and their impacts on systems performance.  The example method will discuss a PL/SQL approach to solving the Extract, Load and Transform  (ETL) problem of moving the transactional data to the data warehouse.  Attendees should be prepared for an in-depth technical discussion.

Presenter: Scott Knutsen.

Scott has been working with Oracle since Oracle version 5.  He has designed and developed various systems for government, for profit and non-profit organizations.  These organizations cover the healthcare, banking, insurance, transportation, manufacturing (both discrete and continuous process), retail and telecommunications industries.  He has worked in roles that cover the information technology spectrum.  In his spare time, he is remodeling an old Victorian house in Mooresville, North Carolina.

Don't miss out on this excellent opportunity. Bring any questions on this topic to discuss during the Q&A session. This will be a highly technical presentation to database designers, developers and architects. Come and learn from what the expert has to share.
