Agenda for June 2005 CLTOUG Meeting

Date & Time: Thursday, June 9th,  5:45 - 8:00pm

Location: Premier Inc.

Presenter: Wolfgang Breitling

Wolfgang graduated with a degree with a mathematics from the University of Stuttgart, Germany. He joined IBM Germany in the QA department where he worked on the development of an OS kernel for /370 hardware architecture testing and a test harness to measure the performance of /370 operation codes. After leaving IBM he worked in Switzerland and Canada with many DBMSs (DL/1, Adabas,  IMS, SQL/DS, DB2) and, since 1993, Oracle. Wolfgang was always drawn to getting the best performance out of a DB system.

Topic:  Histograms - Myths and Facts

The presentation will shed some light on Oracle's use of histograms. It will explore different options available in Oracle 9 and 10 to gather column histograms and their effect on the histogram. It endeavors to dispell some commonly held misconceptions about histograms and offer guidance as to where histograms are useful and where not. The presentation closes with a suggestion on how to gather statistics.

Don't miss out on this excellent opportunity. Bring any questions on this topic to discuss during the Q&A session. This will be a highly technical presentation to database designers, developers and architects. Come and learn from what the expert has to share.
