Agenda for November CLTOUG Meeting

Date & Time: Thursday, November 14th,  5:45 - 8:00pm

Location: Royal Sun Alliance

Topic:  Internals of  'SQL Parse Phase'

Parsing of SQL statements is the most expensive part of a transaction, especially when the statement is executed for the first time and when there is no similar statement found in the SGA. When resolving object names, Oracle’s parse algorithms take a different execution or resolution path when synonyms are used. The outcome of this is high utilization of resources.

This information session looks at detailed analysis of what happens as part of the parse operation, how SQL statements are shared, why sharing of SQL queries is beneficial, what are the various steps taken before executing a SQL query.  How to ensure sharing of SQL statements? How is conflicts in memory resolved?

During the parse operation, a step that is to be completed is object name resolution. Oracle provides many options for object name definition, such as direct access, private synonyms and public synonyms.

This presentation will also look at the cost of using public and private synonyms. It also looks at the option of accessing the object directly as a schema owner. This session discusses and answers the following questions:
1. What are the various stages in a parse operation?
2. Why is the parse operation expensive?
3. How could we improve on the parse phase?
4. Why would one consider using a synonym?
5. Why is there a cost in using synonyms?
6. How to reduce this cost?
